Beauty Care Regimen

So here is the 411 on my day-to-day beauty care products.
Nothing special here, all super affordable, and all used daily.

I feel it is important to note that I have NO idea what I am doing when I pick out personal care products. In fact, my skincare regimen should be taken lightly, considering I still breakout like a teenager on a regular basis.  I would love to be one of those girls who just slips out of the house in jeans and a t-shirt with nothing on but vanilla lip smacker--but that is far from my reality.  I must where at least some makeup, or else...Well, let's just say it's not pretty--I'm serious.
1. Matrix Amplify Shampoo and Conditioner:
smells amazing, gives volume without causing tangles.
2. Kirkland Make Up Remover Wipes {from Costco}:
not sure what I did before I found these puppies.
3. Bare Minerals Prime Time, foundation primer:
just introduced to me by my Momma, and I am now hooked. This primer totally fills in large pores, wrinkles and other irregularities so that your foundation doesn't look caked on.
4. St Ives Apricot Face Scrub:
having been using this since I was 16.
5. CO Bigelow Mint Lip Gloss:
Always, always have one in my purse--can't live without lip gloss, and this is the best.
6. Neutrogena Healthy Skin face lotion:
I have an oily t-zone, and this moisturizes without being greasy.

And here is my latest little not-so-secret secret.
Someone who is very special to me introduced me to this product, and it is basically a miracle to anyone with thinning hair.  Believe it or not, Joan Rivers is selling this magic powder on QVC, and because of its awesomeness, I can wear my hair down in public without the stress of people staring at my secret.

For some reason, since becoming a Momma, I never ever have my nails painted. I think mostly because even if I find the time to paint them, I certainly don't have the patience to let them dry before smearing them on my jeans zipper or my kiddos Legos.  Well, this season, I am determined to paint them fun, young summer time colors. mark.my.words.
For the scoop on my makeup products, click here.

And for my hair tutorial, click here.

What is your can't live without beauty product?
Particularly a face wash,
I'm ready to try something new.

I use Philosophy Purity made simple... It seems pricey, but you only have to use a tiny amount, so an 8oz bottle lasted me nearly a year!!

I love nuskin's tri-phasic white system. It works miracles. I also broke out and was oily 30 minutes after washing my face until I used this. It's rediculously expensive. luckily, I work for nuskin so it's affordable. I can never quit.

For the past year I have been using the Purpose face wash. It is less than $5, smells good and does a good job. My holy grail products right now are;
Urban decay Surreal mineral makeup foundation
Any shampoo/conditioner that gives my fine hair volume
and always, always a bronzer. Currently using one from Everyday Minerals.

I try and use a sunless tanner on face and body but lately haven't found the time for upkeep.
Do you use any sunless tanners?

I used to throw whatever I wanted on my face until I came across the cosmetic database. It's pretty interesting to look up what we are really putting on our skin....our largest organ. Now I use Havvn, the first all natural, chemical free skin care ever. It is amazing anti-aging face cream, and a cleanser and toner are currently in production.

I have also used St Ives Apricot Scrub since I was 16! My brother introduced it to me as his girlfriend (now wife) used it. I try other things every now and then but I always go back!

I also like Fresh Sugar lip balm (tinted and non-tinted) and Biore astringent for blackheads (eew).

St. Ives has always made me break out! I'd stop that immediately if i was you :) but you're not me, so our skin is different...

What works for me, though, with acne is simple: Dove unscented bar soap. Its what my dermatolgist recommended when I was a teen and it's really helped clear my skin up. It's gentle without being wimpy.

"Regiment" is something military related.

I just use Cetaphil for my face wash. It is really gentle, but gets all the nasty off of my face. I also use a spot treatment cream from Image that kills off blemishes.

I love the site:
beautypedia.com

It's where a dermatologist actually considers the ingredients of each product and compares them to the "claims" of that product. It saves me from blowing money and something that doesn't work at all!

hmmm well, i have very sensitive skin so i can't use anything with fragrance or beads such as scrubs... plus i have many broken capillaries. so, my dermatologist just recommeneded Dove bar soap {unscented} and cetaphil lotion. that's it! i switched from cetaphil to aveeno b/c cetaphil can be oily and i don't need any more oil!

Pro Active all the way! I started using it 6 years ago and went from constant breakouts (at least 2 or 3 pimples present all the time) to NONE...EVER! Best stuff ever! I think it took about 6 weeks before I was completely clear.

So for my hair even though it is fine (it is super dry) so I use Matrix sleek look. Then add some volume with teasing/blowdrying. I follow that with Chenice spray. not sure where to get it (my hairdresser DRIVES to Beverly Hills and back to Tucson so she can offer it to her customers). It is a shine spray and also helps moisturize.

For my face, I use (what I saw a couple other comments say) Dove unscented bar. Dermatologist recommended! But then again I also use prescription acne medication. BUT it is important to note what type of breakout it is. I know that is sort of gross but for the sort of cystic ones that never really come to a head salicilyc acid is actually really great for them! So I use the murad blemish stick. For the others I have a prescription for tretinoin cream (talk to your doctor!) The moisturizer you are using is ACTUALLY what the derm. recommended. BUt it made me oily so I use oil of olay regular moisturizer. Used it since I was a teenager and it has never done me wrong!!

Makeup....I'm addicted to all things MAC, Urban Decay. But for foundation you have GOT to try Laura Mercier. Her foundation and "secret camouflage" are TO DIE FOR!!

PS. I might also be a beauty product addict!! haha Check out Kandee Johnson on youtube she is AWESOME with makeup and beauty regimen advice!!

Ashley,

I have been "stocking" your blog for a little while now :) I love it! Anyway, I break out like crazy still (32) I have been on accutane several times...blah blah blah. What I have found that I absolutely LOVE is, well first, it is an absolute MUST that I wash my face each and every night! Or my face hates me :) So, I start out with a mild cleanser to get the make-up and oil off, using Cetaphil Gentle cleanser. Then, I use Murad acne wash, then here comes my FAV...Dermalogica Daily Microfolient. I LOVE THIS STUFF! It's a little bit pricey, $50 to be exact, but you only use 1/2 tsp. I used to mix it with my Murad cleanser, but started using it alone after the Murad and it works SO much better. It's an exfolient made from rice and other stuff but it exfoliates amazingly and leave's that "flushed" look every girl/woman wants! I had never had the flushed look....ever!....until I started using this every single day and night.
Ok, so that's my night regime, in the mornings, I wash with just the Cetaphil and then use the Dermalogica Microfolient. I read somewhere that the most important thing you can do for your face is a thorough wash at night, and you don't even have to wash in the morning...just rinse. But it's a mind thing for me, so I do wash in the morning, just lightly. And then, every Sunday and Wednesday night, instead of the Dermalogica, I will use Mary Kay's Microderm wash! LOVE IT!
So, there it is, hopefully you try it! All these products are a little bit more expensive, but if used sparingly, they will last 4-6 months! Let me know if you do try any of them and how it works for you :)

I have tried every facial cleanser on the market..Rx, dept store, and drugstore... and have decided that I like Neutrogena Blackhead Eliminating Daily Scrub the best. I love the beads that scrub my skin, it doesn't leave too much moisture (i can tend to be oily and at 37, i break out quite a bit), but it doesn't dry me out, either.

I have fallen in love with shampoos that are sulfate and paraben free. When I highlighted my hair, I used Burt's Bees and loved it (all of them were volumizing for me)!! But after adding dark color to my hair, I had to find one to keep my color, so I switched to Kenra Platinum and am liking that!

I used to break out really badly (I have actually been on Accutane twice, if that gives you any idea!) I have found that even though my skin is oily in the t-zone, it's actually more sensitive than I had ever thought. Products like the St.Ives Apricot scrub are really really irritating (even to non-sensitive skin) and because the nut shell pieces that are in are so hard, they can actually cause little micro-tears in your skins, which allows all kinds of bacteria inside (my derm told me all of this). I've tried different systems that I like such as Aveeno, but I am currently using the line for sensitive skin from Beauty Control. It is amazing, I recommend it to all my friends! My mom started using the line for acne almost a year ago because she used to have really bad adult acne (she's in her mid-forties). Her skin looks better now than it EVER has.

I definitely need concealer... no matter what I do I look tired. bleh

Oh and I use the hairspray of that shampoo and conditioner, and I truly believe it is the greatest smelling thing in the whole wide world!

Love finding new products so thanks for sharing. A face wash I love is Vanicream. The bar sells for under $3 and can be found at Target (by the pharmacy side) and at Walgreens. My derm recommended it to me. I tend to have combination skin and so even though it says for sensitive it works great and I hardly ever break out. Its an all natural soap and paraban free. Def worth checking out.

I am 27 & still have breakouts =( A problem I often find with "acne face washes" is that they'll word great for a month or 2 and then stop. My theory (which is not backed by any professional ;) is that my skin gets used to the wash and so it stops working.

A year ago I started using Derma Doctor Wrinkle Revenge (bought it at Sephora). It's a very unusual cleanser. It just feels like your washing your face with lotion. But it's awesome! My skin is looking the best it ever has. The $24 bottle will last a long time. I love that it works on the acne but doesn't have that "If soaked my face in alcohol smell."

Hi My Love!!
I am going to have to go a try some of these!

I wanted to tell you my experience with the St Ives Apricot Face scrub..
I started using it in my teen too!!
I had So many blackheads on my nose at that time I wanted to try anything to get rid of them... So I started using the scrub like it was directed and I started to break out!
I Freaked out b.c I never really got pimples..and i didnt understand why they where appearing out of nowhere..I didnt realize it could have been the scrub cuz HELLO that was supposed to help me Not to break out.. But then my mom started to use it and she started to break out like if she was a teenager all over again!
So we both stop using it and the breakouts went away.. Then 6 months later i was like maybe it was just a bad bottle LOL so bought a new one and i used it again and broke out Again..I learned my lesson after that :)

Sorry this is so long.. but maybe you should try to not use it and see if it helps some? I also read in a mag that using scrubs or any type of scrub pads help you break out More because they help spread the bacteria from one stop of your face to other parts of your face, which makes total sense right? So now the only washing i do of my face is in the shower no soap or anything just water.. I know weird right? But i get like 1 or 2 pimples a month- You know that time of the month when aunt flow pays a visit and thats it no big breakouts. My cousin had really bad break outs and i told her to stop washing her face and only do it lightly with water in the shower and her face got so much better!
Ok this is getting ridiculously Long Sorry! lol
Big Hugs
Keren

My face still breaks out (I'm 30). Daily, I use Grandpa's sulfer soap from any health store. It's like $2 and works so well. All natural. My face has never been so clear. I've tried all the expensive stuff for years, as well as pro active, and for me, this cheap little bar works wonders.

oooooo i love this post, particularly because you asked about face wash. i'm currently going chemical free! you heard me, no face wash, no shampoo, no conditioner. it is FABULOUS. my hair is amazing, and my skin has had ZERO blemishes, and i swear to baby jesus i'm glowing. :) haha i sound like a commercial. i've been using the OCM (oil cleansing method), and loving it. the shampoo thing, just baking soda, apple cider vinegar, and the occasional beer for a hydration treatment. i'm still a newb to the no 'poo process, but i've been doing OCM for almost a month. my personal ratio is 1/3 castor, 2/3 olive, and 1/8c coconut oil for softness and a pleasant smell. you can read all about it, just google oil cleansing method. its amazing.

Hi Hi!

Ready to indulge your 10 year old self? I, too, use the Neutrogena pink grapefruit line.. AND..

Ready for this? The L'oreal Go-360 foaming face wash. Mmm.. pre-teen love! It's the one with the little-scrubber that gomes with it. It gets you clean, but not stripped like some other cleaners. In the words of Borat, "So very nice"..

My other routine is a healthy blend of Clinique (maw maw, I know) and Benefit.

I need a makeup artist! I use philosophy purity and until recently used hope in a jar. I had to switch to miracle in a jar because, well, let's face it, 40 isn't all that fabulous on me! Then I apply burt's bees lip balm. It stops at that, unless I'm going out for a special occasion, in which case I apply real lip gloss. I need makeup but it looks like my 5 year old applied it, so I don't bother. Bummer, really. I think I might try using a paint brush...I seem to have ok results with painting! ;)

Hi Ashley! LOVE your blog!

I am currently using the new Neutrogena Naturals scrub and makeup removing cleanser and I LOVE THEM, I repeat LOVE them. The best part is that they are inexpensive, easy to find and last a long time! I use the scrub in the morning and the makeup removing cleanser at night.

I also use the Olay Pro X line, but the jury is still out on that one! I find the moisturizer to be a bit heavy for my already-oily skin during the day. I do really like the eye cream that comes in the kit and the night cream, though!

This sounds a little crazy, but a friend turned me on to the trick of using deodorant on your face. Yeah, that's right. Deodorant.

I have extremely oily skin, and therefore acne ALL the time, though I am nearly 35. My friend told me to try "Crystal body deodorant stick" in the purple plastic container. (http://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Body-Stick-Deodorant-4-25-Ounce/dp/B001ET764E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307370709&sr=8-1)

I'm sure the brand doesn't matter so much, the important part is that it contains natural mineral salt and ammonium alum - and that's IT. The mineral salts dry up my acne so fast!

Sounds nuts, but I've been doing it for about a year now and it really works! My skin looks much clearer when I use it on a regular basis. And one $6 stick lasts forEVER. I just have to be sure to moisturize well so my skin doesn't get too dried out.

I rarely do any kind of makeup, but when I do it's Maybelline's Great Lash mascara in the pink and green tube. It's worked the best!
Plus Burt's Bees Lip Balm. Cannot go wrong with it!

Check out the Paula's Choice website, or beautypedia.com (which is also a Paula Begoun website). This lady has made it her life's work to discover EVERY ingredient in every product out there, and gives honest reviews about each product. She has written several books over the years too (Don't go to the Cosmetics Counter without Me, etc.). Several years ago, she created her own line of products based on ingredients that are beneficial AND gentle. I am 100% sold... as in, I use 100% Paula's Choice products. NOTHING burns your skin, and it's so gentle, you can even get it in your eyes. She offers alpha and beta hydroxy acids that don't burn, which is unbelievable. Some products are on the pricey side, but the face cleansers are comparable to anything at the drugstore... that being said, you have to purchase it in a larger size, which makes the cost a bit more up front, but per ounce wise, it is comparable. The larger bottle lasts longer, obviously. Omigosh, I just noticed that I have practically written you a book on Paula's Choice products because I love them so much! Even if you don't want to buy them, at least check out her reviews on beautypedia.com, under the "Learn" tab. Hope this helps.

So, I've been stalking your blog for over six months now and I have to say that I feel like it offers just enough of everything to make me feel so connected to you --even though I've never introduced myself. Anyhow, for about $6.00 at your local Sallys or Walgreens, you can find Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat--it has become my best friend. For about three minutes that you can spare, your polish will be not only super dry, but will last at least five days--I swear by it--if I knew your address, I'd send you some because I keep a stockpile. Anyhow--try it, and keep blogging--I love it!

Hi Ashley! There are so many great products out there-- so hard to narrow down what's best-- it all boils down to your skin type. Very dry, dry, dry combination, oily combination, oily, or very oily. Then focus on your skin concerns: sensitivity, discoloration, pores, breakout, aging, redness, etc. I'm a total Clinique girl. I do work for Clinique part-time, but even if I didn't, I would still say that. Promise! I've tried lots of things. LOTS of things. Even the St. Ives Apricot scrub, but my most successful regimen so far is the Acne Solutions line from Clinique. I'm almost 30 and it seriously has cleared up my skin. Everyone I know tells me. For years I've been hiding behind a mask of makeup-- and now I'm comfortable enough to let my own skin shine! If you have a chance, I'd love for you all to check out my post. Thanks again for the GREAT post! I am going to try Matrix next time around... I'm always trying new shampoo/conditioner! I just switched from Redken to Joico. I love the shampoo, but I need a really good moisutrizing conditioner with these highlights!

I've always been picky with face wash because (a) I've had super sensitive break-outy skin since I was like 12 and (b) I am a name brand sucker. Believe me, my parents and I have spent some serious moolah investing in face products. However, when I was about 21, my mom convinced me to try the Avon Clearskin Blackhead Clearing Daily Wash and I am now almost 28 and I have not switched since!! It's helped me control my breakouts and stay fairly clear since!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Equate (Wal Mart generic brand) face wipes, the dry ones that you get wet and they lather up! (I think they are the generic of the Oil of Olay brand ones) They are great at removing eye makeup but not too harsh. They really make my face feel clean and I toss it in the trash when I'm done! At $6 for 60 in the refill pack, it can't be beat!

Ashley,
I just have to say you had me at "mint"- I can't resist things that smell like mint, so I immediately went & bought the mint lip gloss before I even got halfway through with your post. Another mint-smelling thing I love is Aveda Rosemary Mint shampoo- a little expensive so I don't use it all the time, but I love the way it smells. (Not a big fan of the conditioner though, it doesn't make my hair soft.) Thanks so much for sharing! And I wanted to let you know I've used your hair tutorial several times now, you inspired me to go out & buy a curling iron, I didn't even have one!

Mary Kay TimeWise is really good and has different formulas for oily and dry skin. You can look on their website to find a consultant in your area :) It may seem a little pricey, but it's good quality and you don't need much.

I don't know if you read old post comments, but I am new to your blog and trying to catch up all your old posts. I totally love proactive! If u you buy it from qvc they offer a 30 day trial...then proactive offers a 30 day trial on top of that...so if you don like it you can return it with no hassle. It took about 6 weeks for my skin to totally clear up, now i can get away with only using it at night. I also love equate (walmart) oil free makeup remover (a neutrogena copycat) it works great on waterproof makeup...I also love BurtsBees...I am obsessed with their lip balm and baby wash (the best smelling baby wash ever!) :0)
